About Thomas Sheets Environmental Art
My art is simply an expression of my world as I see it. Some of my pieces represent what I was feeling at a particular moment. Other pieces, however, simply because of the time they take to create, express conflicting moods because I work on them for weeks, sometime months. When you look at one of my pieces at a distance you will see what I have created. However, When you look up close at the individual pieces within my work, you will see what nature has created. A collaboration if you will.
The reason I began creating with driftwood is because I found every individual piece to be beautiful within itself. However, the only people that actually get to see it are those who find it themselves while visiting the ocean. Many people never get that chance and the driftwood is washed back into the sea never to be seen or appreciated again. By immortalizing these individual pieces into works of art, I can hopefully share them with the world.
What I hope to achieve, is to bring these beautiful pieces of nature to the people of the inner city. People that are surrounded by concrete, steel and glass. People that have never really had the chance to spend any time surrounded by nature. Maybe inspire them to come out and experience nature first hand, the oceans, forests and deserts. Feel the wind in their face, the sand between their toes, hear the birds, smell the air, to feel like a natural human being. Most importantly, to truly understand how important it is that we cherish and protect nature and the environment.
